Local Area
:

The historic Lake District town of Kendal is set on the banks of the River Kent and is often referred to as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off from the attractive main street – with a well-deserved reputation for excellent shopping - whilst the stone ruins of 12th Century Kendal Castle create an incredibly dramatic skyline. Visitors can enjoy The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, with a regular collection holding portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin. The gallery also boasts links with the Tate and so other exhibitions throughout the year are also well worth investigating. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall are nearby, as are numerous limestone escarpments, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. The town of Kendal itself is well placed for exploring the Lake district and the Yorkshire Dales.
