Packed with Roman roads, museums and a wide selection of pubs and restaurants, Dorchester is well worth visiting. Other local attractions include Maiden Castle, the largest hill fort in England, and visit the County Museum, which has a room devoted to Thomas Hardy, the author of 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles’, born just two miles away in Bockhampton. Also within easy driving distance are the glorious beaches and picturesque harbour of Weymouth, as well as the rugged peninsula of Portland linked to the mainland by Chesil Beach and part of the breathtaking World Heritage Coastline.
