Local Area:
As England's most northerly town, Berwick-Upon-Tweed changed hands fourteen times during the Scottish attempt at gaining control of the border territories. Since then, Berwick left its violent past behind and is now a lovely, peaceful little settlement, with its great Elizabethan walls enclosing a labyrinth of cobbled streets, shops, pubs, restaurants and picturesque buildings. Walks along the city walls provide spectacular views over the nearby coast and river estuary. The Maltings Arts Centre hosts a wide array of cultural events, including theatre, cinema and music whilst fishing, golf and riding facilities are plentiful and close. The local leisure centre also boasts a great swimming pool with waves and flume – the prefect activity for when the weather isn't as good as it should be (though if you prefer the real thing, the sandy beaches of Spittal are only two miles away.) With excellent public transport, day trips to Newcastle and Edinburgh are easy, making Berwick a wonderful location for those wishing to explore a little further afield.
