The town of Kendal is situated on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. The town offers old cobbled lanes, an attractive main street, stone ruins of 12th Century Kendal Castle and The Abbot Hall Art Gallery. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, plus the Lake District National Park is within driving distance.
