Local Area
:

As England's most northerly town, Berwick-upon-Tweed changed hands 14 times during the war between England and Scotland over the border territories. This coastal town is now a much more peaceful setting, though retains much of its old-world charm. With narrow streets enclosed within great Elizabethan walls, the town offers excellent amenities including shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs. Walking routes take visitors round the incredible Tudor walls and provide spectacular views over the coast and river estuary. The town's Maltings Arts Centre provides an extensive programme of cultural events whilst nearby, fishing, golfing and riding facilities are all plentiful. For not-so-sunny days, the leisure centre in the town offers a pool with both a wave machine and various rides. Berwick is also well connected to Newcastle and Edinburgh by the train.
