Having changed hands 14 times whilst England and Scotland fought for control of the border, Berwick-upon-Tweed is now England's most northerly town. This lovely coastal town is composed of with quaint narrow streets enclosed within great Elizabethan walls and retains much of its period charm. The Tudor battlements now provide great walking routes rather than protection and visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the coast and river estuary from the tops. The town offers not only the usual shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs but also the innovative Maltings Arts Centre which provides an extensive programme of cultural events including music, theatre and cinema. Visitors who prefer the outdoors are also well catered for with excellent fishing, golfing and riding facilities all within a short distance from the town.
