Local Area:
The village of Chirnside lies on the south side of a hill in the Scottish borders, with stunning views over a flat, fertile, agricultural plain, known as the ‘Merse’. The Merse stretches to the Cheviot Hills in the south, whilst the Eildon hills are to the south-east, with the Lammermuir hills to the north. Chirnside takes its name from the Cairn which stood on the hill at the east end of the village, which is though to have been the burial place of some ancient chieftain of the Beaker people. At the foot of the hill is a Norman church, which still possesses its original doorway. The Ninewells dovecote is very close to the church. Chirnside’s most famous son is, undoubtedly, Jim Clark of Edington Mains. He brought fame to the village as World Champion Motor Racing Drive and is buried in the churchyard. A clock to his memory stands at the Crosshill. Nearby attractions include Berwick, which offers excellent shopping, fantastic fishing and great golfing opportunities. Scotland’s heritage Coast is only a short drive away.
