Located near the mouth of the River Shannon in the south-west of County Clare is the coastal town of Kilrush. With a lively history, this little settlement is one of the listed Heritage Towns of Ireland and played an important role as a Shannon port. Today, Kilrush is home to a modern Marina - from which visitors can take boat trips into the estuary - and a Heritage Centre. Alternatively, it is possible to take a ferry to nearby Scattery Island, a 6th century monastic island featuring the ruins of several churches and a unique 10th century round tower. Kilrush itself offers supermarkets, traditional pubs, restaurants and an 18-hole golf course whilst just nine miles away is the seaside resort of Kilkee with its horse-shoe bay, 18-hole golf course, restaurants, pubs, cafes and good walking routes.
