Often referred to as England's finest Tudor town, Shrewsbury is set in a giant loop of the River Severn. Famous for its timber-framed black and white buildings as well as the ancient 'shuts' that connect them, Shrewsbury offers a superb selection of independent and high street shops along with plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants and pubs. In addition to being the birthplace of the renowned biologist Charles Darwin, the town is also the location of Shrewsbury Abbey - founded in 1083 and home to the fictional Brother Cadfael. The city’s castle is an impressive sandstone building, set in beautiful gardens and grounds, whilst Quarry Park is home to the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show. Visitors can enjoy the National Trust's stately Attingham Park - an elegant 18th Century mansion - or Wroxeter Roman City, both of which are within easy driving distance.
