Local Area:
In the heart of the Great Glen, situated just at the south end of Loch Ness, lies the small village of Invermoriston. With the word ‘Inver' meaning ‘along the course of a river' and the river Moriston flowing through the town, it's easy to see where this charming little village - and indeed the famous Inverness – got its name. Also passing nearby, is the Great Glen Way, a seventy-three mile walk – though if you don't quite feel up to such a stretch, there are plenty of shorter paths in the near vicinity. On the banks of Loch Ness, visitors can admire the imposing ruins of Urquhart castle – pronounced ‘Uckart' by the locals – a sixteenth century construction which has played a major role Scotland's history. And of course, as demonstrated in the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre, anyone coming to see the great lake should look out for the monster!
