Its 13th Century castle, built for King Edward I, is widely considered to be one of the most outstanding achievements of medieval military architecture. With two barbicans, eight massive towers and great bow-shaped hall, the property was constructed in a distinctive, elongated shape to better fit on the narrow rocky outcrop on which the castle stands.
