Local Area:
Split into two very distinct halves, the market town of Bridgnorth is composed of The High Town and the Low Town, separated by the red sandstone ridge on which the settlement is built. Connected by winding streets and flights of steps, the two halves can also be accessed by the steep funicular railway, allowing travellers to see what Charles I called "the finest view in all my kingdom". On Saturdays a bustling street market provides an excellent excuse to explore the rest of the town and visit the castle ruins which, incredibly, lean at a greater angle than that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Below Bridgnorth is the River Severn, along which visitors can experience a wide variety of riverside walks, whilst between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster the Severn Valley Railway runs a variety of steam and diesel engines through picturesque country stations.
